All of the UKs bat species hibernate, a state known as torpor. This enables them to survive when cold temperatures mean insect populations are low. Their heart rate can drop to 20 bpm which is significantly lower than the sometimes up to 900 bpm when feeding. On warmer winter evenings, some bats will come out of hibernation for a cheeky snack whilst insects are out.
