This Noctule was discovered on one of our Bat Box monitoring sessions with one of our local Bat Groups. Noctules are the largest bat found in the UK and are a member of the Nyctalus genus. They have golden-brown fur, their ears are a dark brown and their tragus is mushroom or kidney shaped. Adults usually weigh somewhere between 20-40g with a wingspan between 32-45cm, whereas a Common pipistrelle typically weighs around 5g with a 20-23cm wingspan. Noctules roost in trees and are often found taking up residence in old woodpecker holes. Noctules are very high fliers, flying well above tree canopies where they feed on larger insects like moths.
