Bat species in the UK often hibernate underground in disused tunnels, mineshafts and old Ice Houses, but they also hibernate in trees. Many UK bat species will roost in trees during the active season (May-Sept) but as this picture shows taken in January, they also utilise tree features in the colder months. Bats will often move lower down in trees during the winter where the temperatures are more stable. So if you are carrying out tree works and there are features, please get them checked by a suitably qualified ecologist.
